Anheuser-Busch Brewery

Beer Cake

Anheuser-Busch was founded in 1852 in St. Louis, Missouri. At their Brewery you can take a complimentary tour to see the brewing process. The tour is open to every one of all ages. Also during the tour you can learn about the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales and their historic stables that were built in 1885. Of course at the end of the brewery tour you can sample some of the product made in the Brewhouse that was made in 1891. Don’t worry, there are soft drinks available to those under 21.

We didn’t tour the brewery this day but I would like to see it again being that it has probably been well over 20 years since last time I visited. And of course now that I am over 21 I can get that little sample of beer we always wanted when we were little. Maybe when the kids are slightly older we will go, being that they have no idea what beer is. We did however, see a few Clydesdales out in the yard.

Off Broadway

Nightclub cake

Off Broadway is a premier nightclub. It has been featuring national, regional, and local acts for over twenty years. This nightclub prides themselves on the quality of the sound and being one of St. Louis’ most inviting and intimate venues. Being that I have been to plenty of concerts, this one never made it on my list. I will keep an eye out for a band to see there to hopefully check it out someday.

Lafayette Park

First Cake

Lafayette Park is not only St. Louis' oldest Park but one of the first Parks west of the Mississippi. The Park was named in honor of the Marques de Lafayette, a French statesman who served as a volunteer under General George Washington. Lafayette Park was devastated by the powerful tornado that struck the St. Louis area on May 27, 1896.   The tornado destroyed nearly all the trees in the park and didn't recover for many decades.

The Feasting Fox

Brunch Cake

As we plan for a cake spotting run, we try to stop and visit places. Sunday Brunch at the Feasting Fox caught our eye or stomach. We were excited about going and  thought about what German foods would be on the buffet. The Feasting Fox is a neighborhood restaurant taverns built by the Anheuser-Busch company. The Bavarian-style decor offers a relaxed atmosphere.

The buffet was small but offered plenty. Not only was there typical breakfast foods such as eggs, pancakes, sausage and biscuits, there should of been signage to let us know what the German foods we were tasting. It became a game of what is in this food? The homemade apple strudel on the dessert table was one of our favorites.

Our Lady of the Rivers at Portage des Sioux

Maintenance cake

I do not know how many times I wanted to do something only to miss it by a few weeks, months, or even years. When is the next time the Urge is playing down at Mississippi Nights? I am not too sure it will be anytime soon the place has been closed for years. A day late and a dollar short would be very close for me. So when I heard that there was a cake at the Our Lady of the Rivers statue I figured that I would go see the blessing of the fleet and a cake at the same time. I found out that the blessing already happened for this year, so again I was right on top of the situation.

Being that it was a beautiful day I decided to ride out and check out the cake at the statue. It was a nice drive through cornfields and farmland to the little town on the river. I noticed that the cake was a dog cake and I figured that maybe the orginal cake was some how damaged during the recent flood in the area. While I was at the statue there were some people taking care of the area, watering flowers and general clean up, such as getting rid of huge logs left by the flood. I asked them about the cake and they told me that it is the original and as a matter of fact they had to move the cake because of the flood. A tip of the hat to Lynn, Judy and Terry for taking good care of the cake and moving it before the flood.

There was a special exhibit, Nature Connects, Art with LEGO Bricks. Colin and Andrew's favorite hobby. It featured 25 nature inspired sculptures that were constructed with over 300,000 LEGO pieces.

P.S. Our visit took place on a Wednesday where it is free admission until noon. We only had to pay to see the exhibit.

Old Courthouse and Old Post Office

Old Cakes.

Old Courthouse

In 1816, August Chouteau and Judge John B.C. Lucas donated land to St. Louis County for a courthouse. The original courthouse was completed in 1828. However, St. Louis grew so much during this time that the courthouse was outgrown within ten years. A second courthouse was designed and incorporated the original courthouse as the east wing of the building.

The Old Courthouse was the site of the first two trials of the Dred Scott case in 1847 and 1850. Also in the 1870s, it was the location of the Virginia Minor case for a woman’s right to vote trial. The Old Courthouse is also listed in the National Park Service’s National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

Old Post Office

In 1865, after the Civil War ended, five grand Federal Buildings were ordered to be built in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, and St. Louis. These were the fastest growing cities in America at the time. The Post Office opened in 1884 and hundreds of millions of mail were handled all by hand, in the first year alone. By 1942 all of the other buildings in the other cities had been demolished, except for ours here in St. Louis, The Old Post Office.

Fort San Carlos (Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark)

Battle cake

The Battle of Fort San Carlos was started on May 26, 1780. Back then the small village of St. Louis was a Spanish colony. As it was being attacked by British, Indians, and Canadian traders, Spanish Commander Fernando de Layba built a stone tower on high ground over looking the village.  It was this tower that saved the town from destruction. This battle was the only American Revolutionary War engagement fought west of the Mississippi River.

The site where Fort San Carlos stood is now the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark Hotel. A local organization annually commemorates the battle by reading the names of 21 people who lost their lives in the battle.

Wainwright Building

Father of cakes

The 10-story Wainwright Building is among the first skyscrapers in the United States. It was designed by Louis Sullivan, known as the "Father of Skyscrapers," and was the first successful building that utilized a steel frame construction.

The building was named after Ellis Wainwright, a St. Louis brewer, who needed office space to manage the St. Louis Brewers Association. The first floor of the Wainwright Building was intended for shops, with the second floor for public offices. The higher floors were for more offices, and the top floor was for water tanks and building machinery. It was acquired by the State of Missouri and today serves as quarters for government offices.

St. Louis City Hall

Cake of a different color

The pollution problem was so severe in St. Louis that visibility was so limited. Streetlights remained lit throughout the day and motorists needed their headlights to navigate city streets. People thought the St. Louis City Hall building was made of black stone.

The coal-blacken exterior was sandblasted off and reveled it's true colors. Many people were shocked to see the Missouri pink granite of the first story and the pink-orange Roman brick on the upper floors and buff color sandstone trim around the window openings. And to top it all off, the roof is burgundy-red clay tiles.

The Scottrade Center also features a full range of arena programming, including concerts, ice shows, family shows and other sporting events, including being the host for the "Arch Madness", the men's basketball conference tournament for the Missouri Valley Conference every March.

Outside the Center stand statues of Blues' legends Bernie Federko, Al MacInnis and Brett Hull. Colin and Andrew wanted to have their picture taken standing next to Brett Hull. Turns out he celebrates a milestone birthday this year too. Happy 50th Brett!

Eads Bridge

Eads Bridge

The Eads Bridge is a combined road and railway bridge over the Mississippi River at St. Louis, connecting St. Louis, Missouri and East St. Louis, Illinois. The bridge was completed in 1874 and was named for its designer and builder, James B. Eads.

When completed, the Eads Bridge was the longest arch bridge in the world, stretching 6,442 feet. A “test elephant” was taken for a stroll across the bridge when it was completed to prove the bridge was safe. Today the road deck on the bridge was been restored, which now allows vehicle and pedestrian traffic to cross the river. Also the St. Louis MetroLink system has used the bridge since 1993.

Mount Pleasant Estates is the 3rd largest winery in the state of Missouri. It is located in the Rhineland area of the Missouri River. The region was settled by German immigrants who determined that the location was good for growing grapes.

Bonus blog

Bonus Cakes are the Best

Sometimes you go to a place to see a cake and for some strange reason the is no cake. Maybe some one ate it or used it for a party. No biggie although it would nice to say I seen each cake of the St Louis 250, somethings were not meant to be. That is why bonus cakes come in so handy. On a recent trip to Lego Land there was a cake in the lobby made of course out of Lego bricks. It was a fine cake and I was not expecting to see a cake there so it was a pleasant surprise.

Another pleasant surprise was the cake for my grandson's birthday. It was an ice cream cake and was delicious and very fancy. Enjoying a birthday cake with my family and everybody feeling happy was a great way to top off an outstanding day. It was a bonus cake day!

Meramec Caverns

Cakes of The Mound City and The Cave State.

Missouri is known as the Cave State. There are many caves underneath the city of St. Louis so much so that a local brewer used the caves as a natural holding and cooling area for their beer. Probably the most famous caves around here are the Meramec Caverns.

Try driving down the highway without seeing a sign for the caverns, it can not be done. The caves have served as everything from a Civil War gun powder factory, The James Gang hide out, a honeymoon hide away, and a live action set for Lassie. I was a tad disappointed that I did not see any bats and I think my grand children were waiting to see Batman but he was a no-show.

A patriotic song and light show was the high point of the tour. I must be getting old because the caves did not seem all that cool to me and I found it a bit hard to navigate along the pathways. I am sure that there were a few places near by to do some hard-core spelunking but the caverns was about as adventurous as I get.

Washington Avenue

Extra cakes!

We’ve gone downtown St. Louis a few times now to do some cake hunting. Each time we go we have a list and our route. Both times I’ve gone down Washington Avenue and have gotten new cakes that weren’t on our list for that day. So this is a compilation of the Washington Avenue cakes we seem to get when we go downtown cake hunting.

Lammert Building

This Americanized French Renaissance Revival building was built in 1898 on 911-919 Washington Avenue. Hargadine and McKettrick Drygoods Company leased the building until 1923 when Lammert Furniture Company renovated the building and did some alterations. The Lammert Furniture Company was a well-known wholesale and retail furniture vendor that was founded in St. Louis in 1861. The building was designated a City Landmark in 1979 and was renovated in 1984. Today it houses 72 startup companies that make up the T-Rex co-working space, ArchGrants, the Landmarks Association of St. Louis, and the stl250 app developer Candy Lab.

The Missouri Athletic Club

The Missouri Athletic Club opened its doors on September 13, 1903. St. Louis at the time was busy making preparations for the 1904 Olympics and World’s Fair. The athletic club hosted dignitaries from around the world that were visiting St. Louis for the Olympics and World’s Fair. Athletes from the Missouri Athletic Club competed in boxing, wrestling, water polo, swimming and track at the Olympic Games. In March 1914 a fire destroyed the original clubhouse. On March 1, 1916 the present-day clubhouse opened its doors with a more elaborate clubhouse. In 2007 the Missouri Athletic Club was added to the National Register of Historical Places.
