The Feasting Fox

Brunch Cake

As we plan for a cake spotting run, we try to stop and visit places. Sunday Brunch at the Feasting Fox caught our eye or stomach. We were excited about going and  thought about what German foods would be on the buffet. The Feasting Fox is a neighborhood restaurant taverns built by the Anheuser-Busch company. The Bavarian-style decor offers a relaxed atmosphere.

The buffet was small but offered plenty. Not only was there typical breakfast foods such as eggs, pancakes, sausage and biscuits, there should of been signage to let us know what the German foods we were tasting. It became a game of what is in this food? The homemade apple strudel on the dessert table was one of our favorites.

Washington Avenue

Extra cakes!

We’ve gone downtown St. Louis a few times now to do some cake hunting. Each time we go we have a list and our route. Both times I’ve gone down Washington Avenue and have gotten new cakes that weren’t on our list for that day. So this is a compilation of the Washington Avenue cakes we seem to get when we go downtown cake hunting.

Lammert Building

This Americanized French Renaissance Revival building was built in 1898 on 911-919 Washington Avenue. Hargadine and McKettrick Drygoods Company leased the building until 1923 when Lammert Furniture Company renovated the building and did some alterations. The Lammert Furniture Company was a well-known wholesale and retail furniture vendor that was founded in St. Louis in 1861. The building was designated a City Landmark in 1979 and was renovated in 1984. Today it houses 72 startup companies that make up the T-Rex co-working space, ArchGrants, the Landmarks Association of St. Louis, and the stl250 app developer Candy Lab.

The Missouri Athletic Club

The Missouri Athletic Club opened its doors on September 13, 1903. St. Louis at the time was busy making preparations for the 1904 Olympics and World’s Fair. The athletic club hosted dignitaries from around the world that were visiting St. Louis for the Olympics and World’s Fair. Athletes from the Missouri Athletic Club competed in boxing, wrestling, water polo, swimming and track at the Olympic Games. In March 1914 a fire destroyed the original clubhouse. On March 1, 1916 the present-day clubhouse opened its doors with a more elaborate clubhouse. In 2007 the Missouri Athletic Club was added to the National Register of Historical Places.

World Bird Sanctuary

Raptor cake

The World Bird Sanctuary was founded by Ornithologist, Walter C. Crawford, Jr. Crawford. He began his career at the St. Louis Zoo working with then Zoo's Director Marlin Perkins. Originally named the Raptor Rehabilitation & Propagation Project. The land formerly belonged to the U.S. Army, who used the area as a munitions depot during WWII. Many of the first bird buildings were old Army facilities.

There are live displays of Bald Eagles, Owls, Hawks, Falcons, Vultures, Parrots, Reptiles and much more! They offer free seasonal shows, nature trails and educational programs for all.

An onsite Wildlife Hospital is where veterinarians, rehabilitation staff and volunteers have treated over 300 distressed raptors each year. They also have a Parrot rehabilitation and has treated over 900 parrots 1977.

Bakers dozen Part III

Fourth stop

Most of the land of Tower Grove Park was donated by Henry Shaw in 1868. There are lots of luscious trees and bushes that attracts migrating birds who
fly in the Mississippi Flyway zone.

The cake is very representative of the park.

Victorian designed pavilions
There are also tennis courts, ball fields and paths for walkers, joggers, and cyclists.  Lots of festivals are scheduled during the summer and from May through October a farmers' market is held.

Bakers dozen

Part I

Because I really don't know the St. Louis area all that much I asked my son, Matthew, to map cakes in the area in which he lives. After he looked over the cake listing he came up with a list of 11 cakes. So I took this list to Diane, my daughter, and she added another cake to the list, so now we have 12. We mapped out the route from cake to cake. Sometimes the directions weren't the way Matthew would've gone but we got to them one by one.

First stop
Carondelet Park

It's the 3rd largest park in the city of St. Louis.

The cake was across from the boathouse. We didn't see any boats but we did see people fishing.

Other activities to do in the park are tennis courts, ball fields, playgrounds and picnic areas.

It was Colin and Andrew's favorite. They said it looked like a birthday cake. It had drips of brightly colored paint and tiny beads on top to look like sprinkles.

Second stop
The Bevo Mill

August A. Busch, Sr. built this Dutch mill. It sits half way between the Brewery and his home on Grant's Farm.

The exterior of the building is adorned with colored stones of all shapes and textures that were selected by Mr. Busch from Grant’s Farm. Mr. Busch used the Mill Room as his private dining room and the rest of the restaurant was opened to the public.

At one time the blades were wooden and propelled by wind. They were replaced by aluminum blades and are now electronically operated.

Fish Cake

Eat them up, yum!

You can bike, walk or run the Centennial Greenway in St. Charles County. It is connected to the Katy Trail that runs from the Heritage Museum to the Heritage Park.

It is part of the River Ring Master Plan that will join the Missouri River Valley with the Central Mississippi River waterfront.

600 miles of trails and parks for exploring will pass  through twelve municipalities; Clayton, Creve Coeur, Maryland Heights, Olivette, Overland, University City, St. Charles City, St. Charles County, St. Louis City, St. Peters and St. Louis County.

The name, Centennial Greenway, commemorates the 100th Anniversary of the 1904 World’s Fair, which celebrated the Discovery Expedition by Lewis and Clark, in Forest Park, the 1904 Olympic Games, and the Centennial Anniversary of University City.

Cake-thedral

First church.

Christ Church Cathedral is the oldest Episcopal parish west of the Mississippi River.

It is an example of Gothic architecture, with a belfry tower flanked by gargoyles.

I can hear the bells sound off every weekday at 12:10p.m. They were cast by the same German foundry that did the bells for the German Pavilion at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.  The largest bell weighs 5,732 pounds, making it the biggest in the state of Missouri.

Free tours are available. Inside you can view the church's most impressive feature, behind the altar are intricate carved screens called reredos made of stone from France.

Their STL250 cake is painted with a stained glass design and on top of the layers there are colorful, metallic confetti that are glued down.
