Lafayette Park

First Cake

Lafayette Park is not only St. Louis' oldest Park but one of the first Parks west of the Mississippi. The Park was named in honor of the Marques de Lafayette, a French statesman who served as a volunteer under General George Washington. Lafayette Park was devastated by the powerful tornado that struck the St. Louis area on May 27, 1896.   The tornado destroyed nearly all the trees in the park and didn't recover for many decades.

Across the steet from Lafayette Park is Lafayette Square Plaza. There's a fountain and community events take place here including the Holiday Tree Lighting.
