Grand Basin

Waterfall cake

In 1904 the Grand Basin was created from 45 thousand gallons of water flowing from the Cascades every minute. The Grand Basin was part of the lagoon system.  The lagoon circled around the Palace of Electricity and the Palace of Education. At the time you could take a romantic trip around the Lagoon in gondolas brought in from Venice. When there was a celebration boats were decorated with flowers, banners and flags.

After being restored, the basin is lined with classical promenades and eight fountains that propel water 30 feet high. It's a top spot for wedding pictures, family picnics and paddleboats from the nearby Boathouse.
