St. Louis Children’s Hospital opened in 1879 in St. Louis. It is the first children’s hospital west of the Mississippi River and the seventh oldest in the country. It was founded by a group of eight women in 1879. It was first opened in a small, rented house with only 15 beds.

Today, St. Louis Children’s Hospital has about 250,000 patients yearly and not just from St. Louis. Patients come from all 50 states and 80 countries.

St. Louis Children’s Hospital was one of only 10 to make the U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of American’s Best Children’s Hospitals, where it ranked number 6 in the nation and the only pediatric hospital in the state of Missouri, in 2013.
