Washington University School of Medicine

Washington University School of Medicine is one of the top biomedical research institutions in the United States. According to U.S. News and World Report the school is currently ranked 6th for research.

Medical classes were first held at Washington University in 1891 after the St. Louis Medical College decided to affiliate with the University, establishing a Medical Department. Robert S. Brookings, a University benefactor devoted much of his work and philanthropy to Washington University.

The first female faculty member was biochemist and physiologist Ethel Ronzoni Bishop.

During the 1940's,  two Nobel Prizes were awarded, in 1944 and 1947 to groups of faculty members of the Medical School.
