James S McDonnell Planetarium

Space cake

What began as a prank is now a holiday tradition to wrap the Planetarium's unique hyperboloid structure with a holiday ribbon and massive bow. Local businesses donate the funds and materials.

The Planetarium has the world's fourth Zeiss Universarium Mark IX star projector. It is capable of projecting over 9,000 stars onto the dome that is 80 feet in diameter.

The projector can provide a most accurate night sky and can move the "stars" 10,000 years forward or backward in time. Its' special features allow planetarium staff to demonstrate eclipses, meteor showers and other celestial phenomena.

One hundred-forty-seven down 103 to go.
