Holocaust Museum and Learning Center
Survivor cake
The Holocaust Museum and Learning Center was opened in 1995 and is a department of the Jewish Federation of St. Louis.
The museum provides a chronological history of the Holocaust that include personal experiences of Holocaust survivors who immigrated to St. Louis. There are also photographs, artifacts, and audio-visual displays that show the events that took place in Europe between 1933-1946.
The displays also include pre-war Jewish life and post war life and events.

St. Joseph's Academy

St. Joseph’s Academy was founded in 1840 by The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. This was the second all-girls Catholic high school established in St. Louis. In the mid 1830’s bishop Joseph Rosati, C.M., requested teachers from the Sisters of St. Joseph in Le Puy-en-Valle, France to come to St. Louis. Mother St. John Fontbonne sent eight sisters over from France. Some of the sisters came to teach the deaf while the others opened Mother Celestine’s School. Mother Celestine’s School started in a log cabin in 1836 but it could not hold the number of students wanting to attend the school. So, in 1840 the first wing of St. Joseph’s Academy was constructed.
The school has been remodeled and relocated several times due to the number of people wanting to enroll.

Sappington House Museum
Brick cake
The Sappington House was built in 1808 by slaves. It is the oldest brick house in the St. Louis area. The bricks were handmade on site and there are no nails holding the framework together, only wooden pegs.
It is currently furnished with items made before 1835 and is set up as if the Sappington Family still lived there today.
The Sappington Family were friends of Daniel Boone when he lived in Kentucky. They followed him here to St. Louis in 1804.
The last of the Sappington Family stayed in the house until 1877. It was bought by the city of Crestwood in 1961 after the last habitant of the home left.

Grant's Trail
Granted this cake is hard to find.
One of life's' great mysteries is, “Who is buried in Grants' Tomb?” Today that mystery is, “Where is Grants' Trail cake?”
I wonder if the people who made the 250 Cakes really want everybody to see all of the cakes. I've seen quite a few cakes behind doors and windows, in lobbies of certain inaccessible areas, behind gates, or places that have an admission fee. These are not really totally accessible to the public, for whatever reason I do not know.
I think the latest cake in this style of hard to see cakes is the one on Grants Trail at Clydesdale Park. In order to see the cake you have to go to the other end of the park to a special entrance to get on the trail, but to get to this trail you have to drive through a development down a cul-de-sac that has along the sides of the road by every house a sign that said no parking. You kind of get the idea of driving down this road that you are trespassing. The people in the housing development do not want you driving down the road and I can't really blame them, nobody enjoys strangers driving down their street parking in front of their house, but I want to see the cake.
In order to find this cake this cake if you didn't know the secret entrance to find in this cake and went to Clydesdale Park you would never find it unless you walked down the trail. Even with knowing the secret to finding this cake I ended up somewhere by a baseball field at the other end of Grants Trail.
At least I found this cake, there were times when I could not find the cake.

Jefferson Barracks was named in honor of President Thomas Jefferson, who had died on the Fourth of July of the year the post was established.

Mississippi River Greenway - Trailhead in Jefferson Barracks Park
Great Rivers Greenway continues along the Mississippi into Jefferson Barracks County Park. Manual counts were conducted to track the use of this trail. According to the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation it is estimated that this two mile section of trail is being used for more than 68,000 trips by walkers, runners, and cyclists.
The park is located on a scenic bluff overlooking the Mississippi River on the site of what once was a major U.S. Army installation. Established in 1826, it was the country’s first Infantry School of Practice and served as the primary training and gathering place for the Army of the West. Jefferson Barracks replaced Fort Belle Fontaine, the first U.S. Army installation west of the Mississippi River, which suffered from repeated flooding because of its location on the Missouri River.
Jefferson Barracks Park offers a mix of history, recreational facilities and natural features. Stone buildings from the post now serve as museums for permanent displays, special exhibits, as well as tours, classes and seminars.

If any state represents the War Between The States it is Missouri. During the war the state itself was bitterly divided. The Dred Scott Decision was past down right here in St Louis and our state gave title to The Missouri Compromise. Lincoln spent much time in the area and Grant lived here.
The Missouri Civil War Museum is a great place to start on a personal journey through one of darkest periods of our history. Every so often there is a Civil War reenactment at Jefferson Barracks and it is a good place to see period weapons in use and infantry drills preformed.

One of the best things that the nuns taught me was this prayer;
I still use it today. I hear it also works with his statue. Turn the statue towards wall and tell St Anthony he will be turned around when this missing object is found.
At the medical center that bears his name I am sure he has helped some find their health again, although turning around the statue in the front of the center is not necessary.

Castlewood Park

Castlewood Park offers fishing and boating on the Meramec River and has a variety of trails hiking, mountain biking, walking paths and dogs, on a leash are allowed.
The most visited section of the park is on the north side of the Meramec River. It includes land on the south side of the river that can be accessed from Lone Elk County Park. The south section of the park includes the World Bird Sanctuary.
We set up a picnic lunch and was swarmed by pesky bees. There was even an apple core at the edge of our picnic area but they liked us, Diane, better. We lined up the bees we swatted them as a reminder to all other bees that they could end up like their friends if they got too close.

There have been several updates to the building since then bringing it to its current state. The school was named after the popular train station, Barretts Station. The area around the school was sold to the Missouri Pacific Railroad by J.R. Barretts and his wife.

There are times when I look at the picture that I am going to snap and I see how lucky I am. This happened to me at Barretts Elementary School. Seeing my grand children in some of these pictures shows me that there is hope for the future and the present is bearable. Playing the card game war, building a Lego house or watching Sponge Bob reminds me that younger generation is smarter and quicker than I am and that is the way it is supposed to be.
If my grandson can give me the definition of a balloon as an inflatable rubber device and spell every word correct right off the top his head, that leaves me in the dust. As the song says teach your parents well. The fresh face of the future is our most valuable resource care for it with love.

United Hebrew Congregation began in 1837 on 2nd and Spruce Streets, a location that is now part of the Arch grounds. Two Jewish immigrants organized the first minyan ever held west of the Mississippi River in a rented room above Max’s Grocery and Restaurant.
Four years later, the Jewish community adopted a constitution under the name United Hebrew Congregation. It was the first synagogue west of the Mississippi and only the 20th in the nation.

Later the building was home to the International Machinists Union and the Medinah Temple.
After twenty years without occupancy, all the arts have returned to this space. The center presents the St. Louis Arts Awards honoring individuals who achieve a legacy of artistic excellence, and organizations and businesses that enrich St. Louis’ arts and cultural community.

The Arena was an oval shaped building, seating nearly 20,000 persons. At one time, Ralston Purina purchased the building and it became home of the St. Louis Blues Hockey team. They put the company logo on top of the roof and it became known as the Checkerdome.
It was a great site for conventions, concerts, circuses, ice shows, flea markets, animal shows and sports competitions because of its lamella roof was supported by 20 cantilever steel trusses, eliminated the need for view-obscuring internal support pillars.

Central Institute for the Deaf
The Central Institute for the Deaf started with four children. It takes the acoustic approach to teach deaf children to listen, talk and read without using sign language.
Students are aided by digital hearing aids and cochlear implants allowing for partial hearing, while also learning to read lips.
This year the institute is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

In 1890, the St. Louis school system established Sumner Normal School to train black teachers. In 1929, its name was changed to Stowe Teachers College, after author Harriet Beecher Stowe.
In response to the U.S. Supreme Court's 1954 decision in Brown v. Board of Education mandated integration of public-school systems, Harris and Stowe Colleges were merged into one institution. At first it was called Harris Teachers College. At the request of alumni, Stowe was added and the school became Harris-Stowe College.
And in 2005 when the college attained university status, it was renamed Harris–Stowe State University.

As you tour through the Scott Joplin House you can hear a player piano playing Scott Joplin melodies. It is here that Joplin and his wife Belle lived in during their time in St. Louis. The home is furnished with decor dating back to 1902 when Joplin produced some of his best-known works, including The Entertainer and March Majestic.
He was inspired by the 1904 World's Fair and composed Cascades.

Jefferson Bank and Trust

Incorporated in 1892, Jefferson Bank, one of the oldest neighborhood banks in the city of St. Louis, was originally located at the northeast corner of Jefferson and Franklin avenues.
The Jefferson Bank and Trust was the scene of one of St. Louis' biggest civil rights demonstrations. When I took this picture the October Ferguson demonstration was in full swing down the street. History repeats itself.

Across the pedestrian bridge, from the Planetaruim, over the Highway 64/40 is the main building of the St. Louis Science Center. The new building includes an Omnimax, called the IMAX Dome theater, and The Energizer Machine.
The three stories tall Energizer Machine has balls that are constantly whirling about causing all sorts of noises from over 50 different things ranging from bells to compressed air blowers, to chimes, to drums.
New exhibits in the main building are devoted to Earth science, emerging technology, life sciences, physical science, and chemistry. Within two months after the remodeled Saint Louis Science Center opened, it became one of the most visited science centers in the world.
The Center is one of only two science centers in the United States which offers free general admission.

The area Prairies ,Wetlands and Ruth Park Woods are thriving ecosystems that provide much needed habitat for indigenous and migrating species and outdoor classrooms where children and adults can explore the Missouri landscape as it existed prior to westward expansion.
